Meet the Winter Intern: Xiamara
Hi everyone! My name is Xiamara Garza (pronounced See-ah-mar-ah Gar-zuh). I use She/ Her pronouns, and I am the newest Public Relations Intern for Curator. I am starting my final semester at Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff, AZ, where I am majoring in Strategic Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations, and minoring in Organizational Communication. When I am not at school, working, managing the social media pages of my University’s PRSSA chapter, or interning, I love to do things like try new coffee shops around town and practice self-care any way that I can.
When I first entered college, I had no idea what I wanted to study. I originally chose to major in Communication Studies, but I switched to PR before my first day. I’m glad I took that chance, because since then, I’ve never looked back. I knew I made the right decision because the very first day that I went to class I learned from my professors’ valuable industry experiences. The passion and dedication I have for this field is what keeps me going even in a global pandemic.
I first became interested in beginning my post-undergrad career at a public relations agency after a mentor brought it up in class. They described “agency life” as a fast-paced environment where you could have the great opportunity to become well-rounded in the field. And since that explanation, I’ve been hooked. What can I say, I’m a girl who loves a challenge.
I’m especially excited to start my agency experience with Curator because I can already tell that they meet the most important criteria I have for whoever I work with: the organization aligns with my values. The work that Curator does is meaningful, and I’m honored to grow under everyone here as an innovator, writer, and relationship builder.
