Meet Jacob Carter, Our Summer Intern

Hello, world!

My name is Jacob Carter, and I am proud to announce myself as Curator’s new intern this summer. I hail from the sunbaked valley of Phoenix, Ariz., but just three years ago, I packed up my bedroom and made the two-hour journey north to the place I now call home: Flagstaff, Ariz.

I moved to Flagstaff for myriad reasons, one of them being to pursue an undergraduate degree from Northern Arizona University. As I head into my senior year of studying strategic communication and sociology with a minor in political science, I am incredibly proud of the work I have done not only to establish myself as a qualified and effective professional, but also as a vocal advocate for my peers. My education has empowered me to take my destiny into my own hands, and while it has been a challenging journey, I am rooted in my desire to build and blend my skills in communications and community advocacy.

Prior to interning with Curator, I worked with national nonprofit organizations like the National Domestic Workers Alliance, the Environmental Defense Action Fund, and the Climate Action Campaign. While my work with each of these organizations was varied, they all shared a common goal: elevate the organization’s influence by building shared understanding around an issue. When a shared understanding is formed, it creates powerful networks of people who are all working to achieve the common cause in their own way. Success comes from these groups of individuals harnessing their experiences and creativity to co-construct something that is meaningful to many. Public relations practitioners, much like those in community advocacy, rely on and practice this principle every day to accomplish the objectives of their clients. Needless to say, I am in my element at Curator.

Once I graduate, I will pursue a career in the realm of nonprofit and political communications while narrowing down my endless list of potential graduate areas of study and hobbies I want to explore. Traveling with my partner and spending time with my family in Utah and Colorado will be at the top of that list.

With life always moving so fast, I am a stickler for maintaining a work-life balance that allows me to refresh and recharge. One way I accomplish this is through immersing myself in worlds of fiction and fantasy; whether it be a book, a movie or a video game, I love to be transported to a realm unlike our own where my imagination is limitless. In the world of our own, I am always looking forward to my next outdoor adventure with my partner and dog, Sam. I am a coffee fiend, too, with a love for all things breakfast, but pasta reigns as my favorite food.

I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Curator and continue to build my communications aptitude by learning from industry leaders and remarkable professionals. I have already begun to utilize the breadth of my knowledge and skillset to accomplish the objectives of Curator’s clients, and I will continue to do so all summer.
