The Curator News Feed: April 5, 2013

If you missed some of the clever April Fool’s jokes put out by companies like Google and Virgin, we’ve got you covered! Check out this year’s best pranks and our other favorite news picks of the week!

April Fools’ Day 2013: The 10 Best Pranks from Around the Web, TIME Newsfeed. From a PR perspective, it may be one of the worst days to make a legit company announcement. But, I can’t help but love all of the web pranks that come out come April 1st. This year we saw it again and TIME highlights its top ten selection. I’m pretty sure the  U.S. set a record in the number of pranks involving cats (i.e. Vimeow and cats in the military). But, I still can’t help but to love Google’s creativity when it comes to this prankster holiday. – Annie

How Far Is It To Mars?, distancetomars.com. I've said it before and I'll say it a million more times: The best communication takes complex information and makes it simple. This site makes one of the better attempts I've seen at visualizing just how far it is from the Earth to Mars, should we ever (and we should) attempt a wo/manned mission. It assumes the Earth is 100 pixels wide and uses that as a scale to page scroll down, first to the moon, which is relatively close, and then to Mars. Get ready for a few minutes of auto-scrolling. It's a lot further to our neighbor than you probably think. – Paul

Stop calling us 'PR Practitioners', PR Daily.  It's always interesting to hear how people in the public relations describe their jobs to those outside the industry, or even within the industry. Whatever the label may be, PR is all about relationship building. That's a pretty credible function in my book! – Noelle

Mobile Coffee Shop, PSFK. I don't drink coffee at home but I still manage to drink it everyday. This new kickstarted project helped me realize that I drink coffee for the culture. Which immediately answers the question if I'd jump on this mobile coffee truck designed to bring creatives together. – Brooke

Evil Dead Review, Seattle Times. Watching horror movies and scaring the pants off each other is how my little sister and I bond, so we were excited for the new "Evil Dead" release. Sleep tight, don't let the soul stealing demons bite! – Liz

A Look at the Life of Cinema’s Greatest Appreciator, The Daily Beast. A powerful voice in entertainment went silent this week. RIP Roger Ebert. “I hated this movie. Hated hated hated hated hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it.” – Roger Ebert – Ann Marie

Everything You Need to Know About Facebook Home, WSJ Blogs. Facebook Phone? Well, yes and no. Looks like a great user experience and definitely better than on the iPhone, but I wouldn’t count Apple out by any means; I’m sure they’re already concocting ways to make Facebook run better on the iPhone. Good read if you’re a stockholder, Android user or are considering becoming either. – Dan

Summer Entertaining at West Elm, Coco + Kelley. Out West Elm Seattle client is throwing a Summer Entertaining shindig next Wednesday, April 10, and it's being hosted by none other than the lovely Cassandra LaValle of Coco + Kelley! Guest will have the opportunity to learn a few tips on how to style their next party, from the best in the trade, using items from WE's new, brightly hued Summer Collection. – Jennifer

How Target fixed its 'manatee gray' plus-size debacle, The Week. It’s interesting to see how brands react to consumer complaints via social media – some have the typical canned response while others take a more personal approach that (I think) resonates more with their audience. Target’s latest Twitter debacle is a good example of a brand taking a customer complaint head on, even when some might argue they didn’t necessarily need to. – Megan
